About this trip

Six days is enough to see the valley properly if the route is built around the driving rather than against it. This one keeps the long transfers in the morning and leaves the afternoons open.

Two nights on a houseboat, two in Gulmarg and one in Pahalgam, finishing back in Srinagar for the flight home.

Day by day

  1. Met at the airport and driven straight to the houseboat. Nothing is scheduled for the rest of the day, which is deliberate — most people arrive tired.

  2. The old city in the morning while it is quiet, then Nishat and Shalimar in the afternoon. A shikara back across the lake as the light goes.

  3. Two hours on the road, climbing the whole way. The gondola runs in the afternoon, weather permitting; if it does not, we move it to day four rather than lose it.

  4. A free day at altitude. In summer the meadow walk to Khilanmarg is the better use of it; in winter this is a ski day.

  5. The long way round through Pampore, where the saffron comes from, and on to Pahalgam for the night.

  6. A slow morning by the Lidder, then back to Srinagar in time for an afternoon flight.
